Let's Do This!!! Nov 11/09
Holy smokes, it’s hard to believe that the season is on top of me already. Seems like it was last week we were racing in Lake Placid at World Champs. Non-the-less it was a great summer of training and preparations for this season and I’m rarin’ to go. I think if the past 7 seasons of sliding have taught me one thing it is to enjoy each moment and not wish it all away for the big race at the end. This is a crazy journey to be on I’m really trying to take it all in and savor the unique opportunity I have before me to become an Olympian and compete at home. Double whammy if you ask me. It will be all over before I can blink, literally, and it won’t happen again… unless… no, too many unknown variables with time travel. Selection races went well. We got in some good training in Whistler with an Olympic simulation race there (four runs over two days) and then came back to Calgary for two more regular races (two runs one day) the following weekend. The first Calgary race acted as the 2009 Canadian Championship and the next day we had the 2010 Canadian Championship. I was fortunate enough to win both races and not only secure my spot on the World Cup team for the start of the season, but become a four time National Champ. I’m not sure if anyone has ever won four Skeleton titles in a row before in Canada but I can say it’s been done now. The best thing about some early success is the momentum it gives for going into the start of our competitive season. Our sport is so cerebral that when you are sliding confidently and not over-thinking things, you can be fast. When you struggle you tend to try and find speed and ultimately over steer, over react, and try too hard. I feel good right now and am having fun getting ready for tomorrows race. I’ll update my post race thoughts when I have them figured out later. Take care!
